The Davis Library Archives is digitizing a collection of historical insurance policies! We will regularly feature selections from the collection as we work to create an online database of historical insurance documents with images and full-text search capabilities.

Here is a image of the original policy insuring the property of John Jefferson of Scarborough in the County of York against fire for a premium of six shillings in 1735. This documents is referenced in “The Fire Insurance Contract: Its History and Interpretation, published in 1922 by the Insurance Society of New York, demonstrating the origins of the standard fire insurance policy. All of these resources are available at the Davis Library. If you would like to use original documents from the archives, please call or email us to make an appointment.

Interested in this project? Want to use these resources for your research? We’d love to work with you, so please let us know.
