Labor Day is a national holiday celebrated on the first Monday of the month of September. This year it is Monday September 5th, 2011. The first ever ‘Labor Day’ was celebrated in the year 1882 on September 5th also in New York, the whole country started celebrating the day as a national holiday from 1894 after many workers died at the hands of US Military at the time of the Pullman Strike.
