My name is Costantino Spinosa and I am a senior history major at St. John’s University. I have been interning at the Davis Library for four months. I chose to pursue an internship at the Davis Library Archives and Special Collections because I would like to pursue a career in public history. My experience thus far has involved research on insurance companies dating back to the 18th century and has introduced me to a sphere of history in which I had not previously known about. My research focused on multiple aspects of insurance companies throughout history such as emblems, damage repairs, and major people in the insurance industry.

I am currently working on a collection that is centered on a well-known person in the insurance industry in New York City during the 20th century: Arthur Cyrus Goerlich. Processing the collection has educated me in the steps that are taken in organizing archival collections. Perhaps the most important (and certainly time consuming) aspect of organizing a collection is going through materials and trying to find commonalities that may exist amongst a set of records (for example in the collection I am currently working on, I have divided the materials into sets of personal correspondence,  press clippings, photos, etc). When the collection is organized, the next step is to prepare a finding aid that will outline the contents of the collection. The finding aid provides general information about the collection, as well as outlines how the collection has been organized; it is important that the finding aid is done properly in order to better assist researchers.

Students at the University of Colorado students moving out of the dorms last spring donated 42,012 pounds of unwanted item- fans, mirrors, snowboards, computer printers. This was more than double the amount of donations made the previous spring, according to a new report. It could be a sign of an improving economy. In the thick of the recession, it appears, students were more likely to hold on to their goods, donating 15,354 pounds of reusable items in 2010 and 20,144 pounds in 2011.

May has come and gone along with the graduation ceremonies of most major colleges and universities. A recent New York Times article does a good job of capturing memorable thoughts and moments from this year’s crop of key note speakers. Enjoy.

The Peter J. Tobin College of Business would like to congratulate Dr. Petra Steinorth, assistant professor of risk management, insurance and actuarial science, for receiving the 2011 Ernst-Meyer Prize from the Geneva Association for her doctoral thesis on “Essays on the Economics of Selected Multi-Period Insurance Decisions with Private Information.”

The Geneva Association, an international association for the study of insurance economics, identifies fundamental trends and strategic issues where insurance plays a substantial role or which influences the insurance sector. Every year, the Association awards the prestigious Ernst Meyer Prize for university research work, usually in the form of a doctoral thesis, which makes a significant and original contribution to the study of risk and insurance economics.

In addition to this recent accomplishment, Dr. Steinorth’s doctoral thesis has won several awards including the national prize for the best insurance economics dissertation from the Hamburg Center for Insurance Sciences and an outstanding dissertation award from Munich School of Management. She was awarded her doctoral degree in public economics with a concentration in risk management and insurance from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München in November 2010.

In the field of research, Dr. Steinorth focuses on topics on health and retirement insurance. She has recently published in the Journal of Health Economics, Journal of Insurance Issues, Journal of Applied Social Sciences Studies and the German Journal of Risk and Insurance and has been awarded a research grant from the TIAA-CREF Institute for a project on Variable Annuities.

Kudos to one of SRM’s brightest stars! 🙂

An interesting article in the news on the value of receiving  a master’s degree in today’s economy. For librarians the MS or MLS in library science is still a must, a union card if you will to be considered for most most professional openings. This article points out that more than half the students today have the master’s degrees awarded are in two disciplines; business and education and that the current labor needs of the U.S. work force are demanding more technology and engineering skills. Also pointed out is the costs of additional higher ed training is shifting from employer to employees.
